چکیده

Aims During biomechanical preparation of the root canal system, the cutting action of instruments on dentine result in the formation of hard-tissue debris, which can be packed in some areas of the root canal system, mainly in anatomical variations as isthmus, branches and flattening (1, 2). Accumulated hard-tissue debris in the root canal system may compromise thorough disinfection and filling favoring the reinfection and failure of root canal treatment (3, 4). In this regard, irrigation procedures are fundamental in cleaning up the root canal, removing debris from within the root canal space, during and after the root canal preparation. Traditionally, the debridement and cleaning of the root canals has been evaluated by means of histology, scanning electron microscopy and sectioning methods (5-7). However, they are destructive methodologies which during its processing, promotes the specimens decalcification with inorganic tissue removal, as well as section procedures that may result in the deposition of smear or changes in the location of debris (8). Microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) is a non-destructive method that allows sequential analysis of endodontic treatment steps. Recent studies has also been quantified the hardtissue debris accumulated after different biomechanical preparation protocols using micro-CT (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14). Even though there is accumulating evidence on the efficacy of several irrigating methods using conventional methodologies, a comprehensive knowledge regarding the activation of irrigants in different final irrigation protocols, aiming to remove hard-tissue debris from the isthmus area by means of micro-CT technology is still lacking. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate, quantitatively and qualitatively, the accumulation and removal of the hard-tissue debris from root canal system with isthmuses of mesial roots of mandibular molars subjected to different final irrigation, using microcomputed tomography analysis.

Hard-tissue debris accumulation analysis by high-resolution computed tomography scans.

INTRODUCTION Hard-tissue debris accumulation is a potential side effect of root canal instrumentation that has not been systematically investigated. In the current communication, a method to assess this debris using high-resolution microcomputed tomography (microCT) is presented. METHODS Based on prescans, mandibular molars with joining mesial root canals and isthmuses between these were sele...

Prevalence of Mid-Mesial Canal and Isthmuses in Mandibular First and Second Molars in an Iranian Population

Background and Aim: It is essential to know the internal root canal anatomy to reach a successful root canal debridement and a subsequent successful root canal obturation. Due to the importance of knowing the complexity of mid-mesial (MM) canals and isthmuses and how to deal with these anatomic variations, in this study, we examined the incidence and prevalence of the MM canal and isthmuses in ...

Reciprocating root canal technique induces greater debris accumulation than a continuous rotary technique as assessed by 3-dimensional micro-computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION The ability of single-file, reciprocating instruments to remove inorganic debris is uncertain. By using micro-computed tomography (microCT), this study compared the 3-dimensional distribution, quantity, and density of remaining inorganic debris in the mesial root of mandibular molars after instrumentation. A single reciprocating file was compared with a multifile rotary instrumenta...

Histologic evaluation of canal and isthmus debridement efficacies of two different irrigant delivery techniques in a closed system.

INTRODUCTION This study compared canal and isthmus debridement efficacies between side-vented needle irrigation (SNI) and continuous ultrasonic irrigation (CUI) in the mesial root of mandibular first molars with narrow isthmuses using a closed-canal design. METHODS Micro-computed tomography scanning was used to select 20 teeth, each containing a narrow isthmus. Each root was sealed at the ape...
